The yen retreats against the British pound

The yen came under pressure over the sessions against a particularly robust British currency. The pound was among the few currencies capable of resisting the dollar, boosted on Wednesday by the upward revision of UK GDP for the second quarter, before leading the entire G10 at the end of the week.

A cautious Bank of Japan in the face of British resilience

The Japanese currency had nevertheless found initial support through warnings from authorities in Tokyo. However, it weakened as early as Thursday, weighed down by a Tankan index slightly below expectations and a Bank of Japan perceived as less hawkish than anticipated, despite Tokyo core inflation accelerating to 2,7 %. On the political front across the Channel, the Holborn and St Pancras by-election next Thursday will be the next test for Prime Minister Andy Burnham.

Japanese government bond yield curve

August 2024, an unwinding in three sessions

On 31 July 2024 the Bank of Japan raised its policy rate. On 2 and 5 August, positions funded in yen unwound all at the same time: the yen soared, Asian markets lost more than 10 per cent in a single session. GBP/JPY gave up the equivalent of several months of gains in three days.

The episode had no new economic cause. It was enough for a widely practised trade to become less profitable for everyone to leave it at the same moment. That mechanism is what earns this pair its reputation, as well as its unappealing nickname among traders.

An amplitude paid for twice

A turbulent pair costs more than the others, for a technical reason. The gap between the buying price and the selling price widens when the market moves, because whoever quotes takes a risk in holding the position. On GBP/JPY that gap is structurally wider than on EUR/USD.

The second cost is the delay. Between the moment a rate is displayed and the moment the operation settles, the pair may have moved by several tenths. Hence the value, on this rate more than on any other, of knowing the exact price at which an operation will be executed before launching it.

Exchanging JPY / GBP with b-sharpe

8 questions
What is the difference between this converter and a real exchange?

The converter displays the global interbank rate without fees. However, to carry out a real exchange of yen to pound sterling, the financial institution you use (bank or platform) will add a margin. At b-sharpe, our applied exchange rate includes very low transaction fees (from 0.12%), which are significantly lower than those of traditional banks.

Why convert yen with b-sharpe rather than my bank?

Banks often apply hidden margins of up to 2% on the exchange rate. With b-sharpe, fees start from 0.12% and are always based on the interbank rate. In addition, you always have visibility on the exact amount you will receive before confirming. This saves you up to 80% on your transaction fees.
