The dollar advances against the euro
The US dollar strengthened significantly against the single currency over the course of the week. The EUR/USD pair fell on Thursday to 1.1215, a level not seen since May 2025, before ending the week at 1.1251, marking a 1.22% decline for the euro. Concerns raised by the French 2027 draft budget weighed heavily on the European currency, as did energy tensions linked to Washington’s threats to ban its diesel exports.
Solid US yields in the face of European uncertainties
The US currency retained its advantage thanks to persistently high long-term yields. This firmness held even as the probability of a Federal Reserve rate hike in October melted from nearly 70% to 16%. In the eurozone, inflation nevertheless accelerated to 3.8% in September, compared with 3.6% expected, driven by an 18.8% rise in energy prices, while core inflation remained contained at 2.2%. The European Central Bank is keeping the door open for its October meeting after raising rates in September.

July 2022: one euro for one dollar
On 13 July 2022 the euro touched one dollar for the first time in twenty years, then went below, down to 0.95 in September. Three causes added up: the price of gas, which Europe imports and America exports, a Federal Reserve raising rates far faster than the European Central Bank, and finally a war fifteen hundred kilometres from Frankfurt.
The recovery that followed had the same causes in reverse. That episode was a reminder that EUR/USD is not a thermometer of growth: it measures first an interest rate gap and a geographic risk premium.
Two calendars, sixteen dates a year
The most traded pair in the world is in reality played out over sixteen days a year: the eight meetings of the American monetary policy committee and the eight of the European governing council. Between those dates, every inflation or employment figure is read as a clue to what those meetings will decide.
For a company invoicing in dollars, that has a practical translation. Publication days are the worst moments to place a large order: the gap between the buying price and the selling price widens, sometimes by several tenths, while the market digests the news.
