The pound sterling under pressure against the Swiss franc

The pound sterling went through a difficult period on the currency markets, weighed down by announcements from its central bank. While the dollar lost ground against nearly all G10 currencies during the equity rebound, the British currency was a notable exception, remaining under pressure. At the same time, the Swiss franc remained broadly stable against the euro, only conceding losses against a greenback invigorated by the Federal Reserve.

The Bank of England surprises with a dovish signal

The weakness of the pound can be directly explained by monetary policy decisions in the United Kingdom. The Bank of England kept its policy rate at 3.75 % by a 6 to 3 vote. The institution above all surprised investors by unveiling a multi-year balance sheet reduction plan accompanied by a pause in its active gilt sales until April 2027. This stance was deemed dovish by the market and triggered a decline in the British currency, despite an official rhetoric that was nevertheless firmer on inflation.

Two financial centres, two trades

The United Kingdom and Switzerland both live off finance, but not the same finance. London is the first currency trading centre in the world: close to four out of ten transactions on the global currency market are handled there, more than New York and Tokyo combined. It is a business of flow, volume and intermediation.

Switzerland does the opposite: it manages assets. Zurich and Geneva hold a considerable share of the planet’s cross-border private wealth. It is a business of stock, duration and discretion. Two models that do not react to the same shocks, which reads directly in the rate.

What British tremors do to the rate

The demonstration happened twice in six years. The day after the referendum of June 2016, the pound lost about 10 per cent against the franc in a single session. In September 2022 Liz Truss’s mini-budget triggered a collapse in British government bonds and the Bank of England had to step in urgently. The pound then touched its all-time lows.

In both cases the franc did nothing: it simply served as a fixed point. That property is what makes this pair readable. When GBP/CHF moves sharply, the cause is to be found in London, almost never in Bern.
