The dollar prevails against the pound sterling

While the greenback lost ground on Thursday against almost all G10 currencies, the pound sterling was a notable exception. The British currency suffered from its own central bank’s announcements, allowing the dollar to maintain its advantage in bilateral trading.

Marked divergence between the Fed and the Bank of England

On Wednesday, the Federal Reserve unanimously raised its key interest rate by 25 basis points to 3.75-4.00%, while unveiling hawkish projections: twelve of the eighteen participants still anticipate an additional hike by the end of the year and four expect two. Furthermore, the long-term rate was raised to 3.2% by the US institution.

Conversely, the Bank of England kept its key rate at 3.75% by a 6 to 3 vote. The British institution surprised investors by announcing a multi-year balance sheet reduction plan as well as a pause in its active gilt sales until April 2027. This stance, perceived as dovish, sent the pound sterling lower, despite a firmer tone on inflation.

The London session makes the price

The currency market never closes, but it is not homogeneous. Close to four out of ten transactions are handled in the United Kingdom. Volume peaks there in the late morning, when the European session overlaps the New York open. That is the moment when the gaps between buying and selling prices are tightest.

An order placed at the Sydney open or during the American lunch break therefore costs a little more, without anyone announcing it. For a large amount, the choice of the hour counts as much as the choice of the day.

September 2022, a textbook case

On 23 September 2022 the British government announced unfunded tax cuts. Government bonds collapsed and British pension funds had to sell in a panic. The pound touched 1.03 dollars on 26 September, its all-time low. The Bank of England stepped in urgently to buy back debt.

Forty-nine days later the prime minister resigned and the pound had erased its fall. The episode left a durable trace: GBP/USD now reacts to British budget announcements the way other pairs react to central bank decisions.
