The franc advances against the pound sterling

The pound sterling had a difficult week on the foreign exchange markets, weighed down by monetary policy announcements from the Bank of England. While the dollar fell on Thursday against almost all G10 currencies, the British currency was a notable exception, suffering sharp sell-offs. At the same time, the Swiss franc remained broadly stable against the euro, managing to take advantage of the British currency’s retreat.

The Bank of England weakens the pound

The Bank of England kept its key interest rate at 3,75 % by a 6-to-3 vote. While the institution delivered a firmer message on inflation, it particularly surprised investors by unveiling a multi-year balance sheet reduction plan and a pause in its active gilt sales until April 2027. This decision, perceived as dovish by the market, triggered a drop in the British currency.

For its part, the Swiss franc lost ground only against the US dollar, which benefited from a Federal Reserve rate hike that pushed USD/CHF up 0,72 % over the week to 0,8220. This relative firmness of the Swiss currency allows it to gain the upper hand against a weakened pound sterling.

Two refusals, for opposite reasons

The franc and the pound share a peculiarity: they are two major European currencies that stayed out of the single currency. The paths that took them there have nothing in common. Switzerland never had to choose, not being a member of the Union. The United Kingdom did choose. Twice.

The first time by accident. On 16 September 1992, the Bank of England raised its policy rate from 10 to 12 and then 15 per cent in a single day to keep the pound inside the European exchange rate mechanism. It failed before the evening and left the mechanism. That “Black Wednesday” cost several billion pounds and durably cooled the idea of a monetary peg in London.

The second time by treaty: at Maastricht the United Kingdom obtained an opt-out clause exempting it from adopting the euro. Twenty-four years later, the 2016 referendum made the question moot.

What that changes for the rate

These two forms of independence are not equivalent on the market. The pound remains correlated with the euro area, its first trading partner: it follows its cycles while reacting to its own rates. The franc does the opposite. It decorrelates precisely when the area is doing badly, because that is when people take shelter in it.

GBP/CHF is for that reason one of the pairs that reveal the European mood most clearly: it widens when worry rises, it tightens when worry falls back.
