The Swiss franc holds firm against the US dollar

Against the US dollar, the Swiss franc experienced a week marked by contrasting movements. The USD/CHF pair initially rose to a peak of 0,8383 driven by US yields, before falling back sharply. The franc then benefited from a return in safe-haven demand on Thursday, which pushed the price down to a low of 0,8228.

The USD/CHF rate ultimately ended the week at 0,8284, showing near-stability with a minimal change of +0,01 %. This performance reflects solid resilience of the Swiss currency against the greenback.

Decline in Fed rate hike expectations

At the beginning of the week, the Swiss franc initially suffered from the yield gap, with the SARON at -0,04 % and the 10-year Confederation bond yielding around 0,54 %. For its part, the dollar benefited from long-term yields that remained high in the US bond market.

However, the US currency lost ground due to a shift in tone regarding monetary policy. Indeed, the probability of a Federal Reserve rate hike in October fell sharply, dropping from nearly 70 % to just 16 %.

The franc and the
dollar, two centuries apart

Switzerland outside the post-war monetary order

In July 1944, forty-four nations meeting at Bretton Woods pegged their currencies to the dollar, itself convertible into gold at thirty-five dollars an ounce. Switzerland was not there. Neutral, it stayed outside the International Monetary Fund for forty-eight years and only joined in 1992, after a popular vote. The franc therefore went through that whole period with no parity obligation, which is rare.

That freedom has a direct consequence on today’s rate. On 15 August 1971, Richard Nixon suspended the convertibility of the dollar into gold. The Bretton Woods system collapsed. Other currencies had to learn to float again. The franc had nothing to unlearn.

A dollar that remains the measure of everything

The dollar came out of its own rupture stronger. No other currency has taken its place: close to six out of ten foreign exchange reserves in the world are held in dollars. Most commodity trade is still invoiced in it. This is what Valéry Giscard d’Estaing called the “exorbitant privilege”: the United States settles its imports in its own currency.

CHF/USD therefore reflects the relative health of two economies less than it reflects two different functions: the dollar is the world’s unit of account, the franc its shelter. They rarely rise for the same reasons.
