The yen regains ground against the euro

The yen benefited from a strong end to the week to emerge as the best-performing G10 currency on Friday. Although USD/JPY climbed to 159.04 on Thursday despite a hike in the Bank of Japan’s key interest rate to 1.25%, verbal intervention by the authorities reversed the momentum. Donald Trump’s comments on the weakness of the Japanese currency, combined with statements from Prime Minister Takaichi, who considers it undervalued, and from the Finance Minister, who anticipates a correction, briefly pushed the rate below 157.00 before a close at 157.22.

The single currency weighed down by multiple factors

Against the yen’s recovery, the euro remained under pressure throughout the week. Against the dollar, the single currency fell by 0.81% to end at 1.1390 after touching 1.1370, not far from its annual low of 1.1325. The euro accumulated several major headwinds: rising US interest rates, strong energy dependence exacerbated by threats to US diesel, and domestic political risk in Germany following the CDU’s electoral setbacks in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Berlin.

A cross pair, and the
savings that run through it

Japanese government bond yield curve

Why a cross moves more

EUR/JPY does not include the dollar. On the market it is nonetheless built from two pairs that do: euro against dollar and dollar against yen. The movements of both add up instead of cancelling out, which gives the cross a wider amplitude than either of its components.

That is why it serves as a barometer. When risk appetite rises, the euro gains and the yen falls back: the pair climbs fast. When caution returns, it comes down just as fast. Few rates translate the mood of the markets so legibly.

Japanese savings invested in Europe

Japan is the world’s first creditor. Its life insurers and pension funds, faced for thirty years with domestic yields close to zero, have placed considerable sums in foreign bonds, part of them in euros.

Those investments are not market bets but long-term commitments, often hedged against exchange rate risk. When the cost of that hedge rises, because the interest rate gap widens, Japanese investors reduce their purchases. EUR/JPY feels it before the statistics do.

Exchanging JPY / EUR with b-sharpe

8 questions
What is the difference between this converter and a real exchange?

The converter displays the global interbank rate without fees. However, to carry out a real exchange of yen to euro, the financial institution you use (bank or platform) will add a margin. At b-sharpe, our applied exchange rate includes very low transaction fees (from 0.12%), which are significantly lower than those of traditional banks.

Why convert yen with b-sharpe rather than my bank?

Banks often apply hidden margins of up to 2% on the exchange rate. With b-sharpe, fees start from 0.12% and are always based on the interbank rate. In addition, you always have visibility on the exact amount you will receive before confirming. This saves you up to 80% on your transaction fees.

Can I lock the rate I see now?

The online converter displays the market rate in real time without fees, for simulation purposes. To lock a rate and initiate a transaction, simply create a free account on b-sharpe.
