The technical picture
of the USD / CHF rate

The dollar ends virtually unchanged against the franc
USD/CHF peaked at 0,8383 during the week, initially driven by US yields. The pair then retreated amid declining expectations of monetary tightening in the United States, and subsequently under the effect of safe-haven demand on Thursday. After hitting a low of 0,8228, the greenback closed at 0,8284 against the Swiss currency, representing a virtually flat change of +0,01 %.
Rate divergences and renewed safe-haven demand
On the US front, the probability of a Fed rate hike in October plunged from nearly 70 % to 16 %, without however denting a dollar supported by long-term yields that remained high. For its part, the Swiss franc was initially penalized by the interest rate differential, with SARON at -0,04 % and the 10-year Confederation yield hovering around 0,54 %. The trend reversed on Thursday, however, driven by easing global yields and European safe-haven demand linked to concerns over diesel supply.

What moves the dollar
against the franc
Two central banks on different clocks
The Federal Reserve and the Swiss National Bank do not follow each other. In January 2015 the SNB cut its policy rate to −0.75 per cent and left it there for seven years, the lowest in the developed world. It came out in June 2022, before the European Central Bank. It started cutting again in March 2024, ahead of everyone there too.
The Fed sets itself by American employment and inflation. The gap between the two policy rates explains most of the movements of USD/CHF: when it widens in favour of the dollar, the pair rises. It falls back as soon as the gap closes. The eight annual meetings of each institution are the only dates that really count.
Switzerland is a dollar investor
There is a second mechanism, less well known. To hold the franc down, the SNB accumulated foreign exchange reserves larger than the country’s gross domestic product, a significant part of them invested in American equities. The Swiss central bank is thus among the large shareholders of several companies listed in New York.
It is therefore exposed to USD/CHF on its own balance sheet: a rising franc costs it, in francs, on the value of its holdings. Its annual results vary by tens of billions depending on the exchange rate, which makes them a recurring political subject in Switzerland when the distribution to the cantons comes up.
