The yen shows stability against the franc

While the Swiss currency lost ground against most major currencies following the monetary policy announcements, the yen demonstrated notable resilience. The pair held steady at 0,5235 CHF per 100 JPY on Thursday. On Friday, the Japanese currency notably benefited from a series of warnings from the authorities, which helped curb the overall rise of the US dollar.

SNB policy weighs on the Swiss currency

The Swiss National Bank chose to keep its policy rate at 0 %, creating a marked divergence from other international central banks. This status quo weighed heavily on the Swiss franc, which did not benefit from its usual safe-haven role despite the tensions observed in the Middle East. In a market driven entirely by interest rate differentials, the yen managed to maintain its level against a Swiss currency penalized by the yield gap.

different balance sheets

The Japanese yen and the foreign exchange market

Debt says the opposite of the reputation

The franc and the yen both pass for currencies of safety, which suggests two prudent states. The public accounts say something else. Japanese public debt exceeds two and a half times gross domestic product, one of the highest levels in the world. Switzerland’s is among the lowest in Europe.

If the yen holds nonetheless, it is because that debt is held inside the country, in yen, by Japanese savers and institutions. Japan has also been a net creditor to the rest of the world for more than thirty years. Two opposite paths to the same reputation.

The end of negative rates, twenty-one months apart

The two countries were the last to run negative interest rates. They came out twenty-one months apart: Switzerland in June 2022, Japan in March 2024. Between those two dates the franc paid more than the yen, which weighed on JPY/CHF for nearly two years.

Since then the gap has been closing slowly. The pair is becoming again what it structurally is: one of the calmest rates on the market, because its two components often rise and fall together, pushed by the same bouts of caution.

Exchanging JPY / CHF with b-sharpe

8 questions
What is the difference between this converter and a real exchange?

The converter displays the global interbank rate without fees. However, to carry out a real exchange of yen to swiss franc, the financial institution you use (bank or platform) will add a margin. At b-sharpe, our applied exchange rate includes very low transaction fees (from 0.12%), which are significantly lower than those of traditional banks.

Why convert yen with b-sharpe rather than my bank?

Banks often apply hidden margins of up to 2% on the exchange rate. With b-sharpe, fees start from 0.12% and are always based on the interbank rate. In addition, you always have visibility on the exact amount you will receive before confirming. This saves you up to 80% on your transaction fees.
