The British pound falls against the dollar

The British pound did not benefit from the widespread retreat of the dollar observed on Thursday against almost all G10 currencies. While the greenback lost ground after the Federal Reserve’s rate hike, the British currency was a notable exception, coming under direct downward pressure against the US currency.

The Bank of England weighs on the pound

The British pound suffered from announcements made by its own central bank. The Bank of England kept its policy rate at 3,75 % by a six-to-three vote. The institution surprised investors by unveiling a multi-year plan to reduce its balance sheet, as well as a pause in its active sales of gilts until April 2027. This decision was perceived as dovish by the market and triggered the drop in the pound, despite a firmer tone on inflation.

“Cable”, or the story of
a wire under the Atlantic

Pound sterling banknotes

A nickname a hundred and sixty years old

Traders never call this pair GBP/USD: they say “Cable”. The word comes from the transatlantic telegraph cable laid between Ireland and Newfoundland, working in 1866 after several failed attempts. It carried the pound’s rate against the dollar between London and New York, cutting to a few minutes a delay that had been ten days by ship.

It is one of the rare names on the currency market that designates a real object. It is also the only one dating from the Victorian era. The cable was replaced long ago. The name stayed.

A long descent

The path of the pair tells the story of financial power moving from one shore to the other. The pound was worth about five dollars before 1914. It was worth four after the 1949 devaluation, then 2.40 after the one in 1967. It touched its all-time low, 1.03 dollars, in September 2022, during Liz Truss’s mini-budget.

Each step of that descent matches a moment when the United Kingdom had to acknowledge a gap between its ambitions and its means. That is what makes the pair particularly sensitive to British budget announcements, even today.
