The pound and the euro under pressure against the dollar

The British pound and the single currency shared a downward momentum against the US dollar over the week. GBP/USD fell from 1,3377 on Monday to 1,3215 on Thursday, weighed down by disappointing UK PMI figures, with the composite index dropping to 51,7 from 52,5 previously, reflecting sluggish growth alongside price pressures. Against the Swiss franc, GBP/CHF benefited from the SNB decision, gaining 50 points on Thursday to 1,0970, while still recording a weekly decline of 0,37 % to 1,0967.

Shared vulnerability factors in Europe

For its part, the euro also faced several headwinds, falling 0,81 % over the week against the dollar to close at 1,1390. The European currency is suffering the consequences of rising US interest rates, its heavy dependence on energy imports, and heightened political risk in Germany following regional election setbacks. The next major event is scheduled for Friday, October 2, with the release of the preliminary estimate of eurozone inflation, expected at 3,5 % or higher compared with 3,2 %.

Technical analysis of the EUR/CHF rate

A band of a few pennies

Since 2016 EUR/GBP has moved essentially between 0.83 and 0.90. Measured against the amplitudes of EUR/USD or GBP/JPY, that is very little. The reason lies in economic geography: the European Union absorbs about four tenths of British exports. The two economies go through the same shocks within a few weeks of each other.

That narrowness has an unpleasant counterpart. When the yearly movement is counted in pennies, the margin taken by the intermediary can represent more than the market variation over a whole year. On this pair more than on any other, the cost of the conversion is the subject.

What the 2021 agreement changed for payments

The trade and cooperation agreement between the United Kingdom and the European Union has applied since 1 January 2021. It removes customs duties on goods but restores neither the financial passport nor the single market in services, which make up the bulk of British trade.

The United Kingdom did, however, stay inside the single euro payments area. A euro transfer to London therefore follows the same rules as a transfer to Milan, which often surprises people. The brake is no longer regulatory. It is in the rate applied to the conversion.
