The euro and the pound sterling under pressure against the dollar
The euro and the pound sterling both lost ground over the week. Against the dollar, the euro opened at 1,1467 before breaking through the 1,1425 support level to hit 1,1370 and close at 1,1390, representing a weekly decline of 0,81 %. The European currency suffered from rising US interest rates, its dependence on energy imports, and the political risk stemming from the German regional elections in Berlin and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
A similar trajectory for both European currencies
For its part, the pound sterling followed a comparable path against the greenback. GBP/USD fell from 1,3377 on Monday to 1,3215 on Thursday, weighed down by disappointing British PMI data, with the composite index coming in at 51,7 compared to 52,5, reflecting sluggish growth combined with price pressures. Against the Swiss franc, GBP/CHF nevertheless capitalized on the SNB decision to rebound by 50 points on Thursday to 1,0970, ending the week down 0,37 % at 1,0967. The next benchmark is set for Friday, October 2, with the eurozone flash inflation figure, expected at 3,5 % or higher compared to 3,2 %.

Three exits in thirty years
The history of EUR/GBP is that of a failed rapprochement, attempted three times. In 1990 the United Kingdom entered the European exchange rate mechanism, ancestor of the euro, which limited fluctuations between European currencies. It left two years later, on 16 September 1992, after a day in which the Bank of England exhausted its reserves defending the pound.
The second exit was negotiated: the opt-out obtained at Maastricht relieved the country of adopting the euro. The third came in 2016, by referendum. Each time the pound fell: by about 15 per cent after 1992, by 10 per cent the day after the 2016 vote.
The pound before the dollar
It is worth remembering what the pound once was. Until the First World War it was the reference currency of world trade: two thirds of international exchanges were settled in sterling. The City of London financed railways on three continents.
The shift to the dollar took a generation and played out across two wars. In 1949 and again in 1967 the pound was devalued. Those were the last attempts to hold a rank it no longer had. It remains today the fourth most traded currency in the world. That rank is considerable for an economy of this size. It is the direct legacy of that period.
