Comparison methodology
This page explains how we calculate and present price comparisons between b-sharpe and certain providers.
1. Scope of the comparison
We compare currency exchange and money transfer services in their basic form, without any paid subscriptions. The total price shown for each provider includes the advertised fixed fees and the margin applied to the exchange rate. This does not include any fees charged by intermediary banks or the receiving bank, nor does it include one-off promotions or benefits tied to a subscription.
2. Sources and calculation methods
Depending on how each provider publishes its information, we use one of the following four approaches to compare prices.
A. Dynamic comparison
Where a provider publishes rates updated throughout the day and we can access them reliably, we record the rate displayed several times a day for different amounts. We note the average market rate at that exact moment, then calculate the total cost by adding the fixed fees and the margin to the converted amount. The result thus reflects market conditions at the time of recording. If the exact amount has not been measured, we present, as a precaution, the result most favourable to the provider when compared across these closely related points. Providers currently covered: Change Migros, PostFinance, BCV, BCGE.
B. Static comparison based on the terms of the contract
Where the service provider describes the pricing method in its contractual documents (for example, ‘X% margin on the average rate’), we apply this rule to the average market rate at the time of the enquiry and add the specified fixed fees. Where providers apply scales or tiers (e.g. fees that decrease above a certain amount or depending on the currency), we include these in the calculation provided they are published in a verifiable manner. Providers currently covered: UBS; Revolut.
C. Static comparison based on surveys/tests
If the information is not published in detail or is only updated a few times a day, we carry out regular checks to measure the margin applied. As a precaution and to avoid any overestimation to the detriment of the service provider being compared, we use the most favourable value observed for them (for example, the lowest margin recorded) and, where applicable, round down to the nearest decimal place. We carry out tests on several amounts close to the reference amount. If the exact amount has not been tested, we use, as a precaution, the result most favourable to the service provider being compared from among these points.
D. Static comparison based on data published by third parties
Where a service provider does not publish its fees in a verifiable manner and we are unable to carry out tests, we rely on information published by third parties based on their own analysis of market pricing practices. Where there are multiple third-party estimates, or if the available data is incomplete, we apply a conservative estimate in favour of the service provider being compared.
3. Update frequency
Comparisons are reviewed on a regular basis. For dynamic methods, readings are taken several times a day; for static methods, reviews take place at least every 90 days, or sooner if we identify a change in a supplier’s pricing practices.
4. Disclaimer
The results are for guidance only and are limited to the scope defined in section 1. Service providers may change their prices and rates without notice; slight discrepancies may occur depending on the exact time of conversion.
5. Disputes and corrections
If you represent a service provider and believe that any information is incorrect, please email [email protected], attaching your supporting evidence (a link or a dated screenshot). We will check this promptly and make any necessary corrections.
