The technical picture
of the USD / JPY rate
Over twelve months, the USD / JPY rate has gained 5.1 %. It currently sits around the middle of that range.
The USD / JPY rate has been easing over the past thirty days. The month extends the quarter, which gives the move some consistency. It is one of the liveliest pairs we cover.
Dollar gains checked against the yen at the end of the week
The dollar initially posted four consecutive sessions of gains on the currency markets. The US currency was supported by the release of US PMI indicators at five-year highs, as well as an increase in the yield on the 10-year US Treasury note, which is now established above the 5% threshold.
However, this winning streak for the greenback came to an end on Friday. Progress in diplomatic talks between Washington and Tehran, combined with a flurry of warnings from authorities regarding the yen, halted the dollar’s advance and triggered a pullback against most global currencies.
Warnings over the Japanese currency weigh on the dollar
Pressure generated by official statements concerning the Japanese currency contributed directly to curbing the greenback’s momentum at the end of the week. This verbal intervention helped rein in the recent strength of the US currency against the yen.

The rate that follows
a yield gap

Two government bonds, one exchange rate
Few pairs read as well on a single chart. USD/JPY follows the gap between the yield on the ten-year American government bond and that of its Japanese equivalent. When the gap widens, capital leaves the yen for the dollar. The pair rises. When it closes, the pair comes down.
That relationship became mechanical from 2013, when the Bank of Japan undertook to control the yield curve: by fixing the Japanese yield, it turned the gap into a variable that depended only on Washington. The control was loosened in 2023 and abandoned in 2024.
When Tokyo intervenes
The Japanese finance ministry can buy yen on the market to support its price. It did so on 22 September 2022, for the first time since 1998, then again in October 2022 and in the spring of 2024. The sums committed are counted in tens of billions of dollars per day.
The effect is immediate but rarely durable: an intervention does not change the interest rate gap that produced the movement. It buys time. For anyone who has to convert, the lesson is that a rate moving by several points in one session is not a good moment to act in a hurry.
