The euro under pressure against a yen supported by the authorities
The cross dynamics between the euro and the yen were marked by the single currency’s struggles and the Japanese currency’s rebound at the end of the week. The euro weakened against the dollar, ending at 1,1390 down 0,81 % on the week after hitting a low of 1,1370. For its part, the yen ended the week strongly to stand out as the best-performing G10 currency on Friday, with USD/JPY briefly falling back below 157,00 to close at 157,22.
Verbal offensive in Tokyo against currency weakness
The euro accumulated several headwinds in the markets: a heavy reliance on energy imports magnified by the threat to US diesel, rising Federal Reserve interest rates, and political risk in Germany following the CDU’s electoral setbacks. At the same time, the Bank of Japan raised its policy rate to 1,25 %. As USD/JPY reached 159,04 on Thursday, a wave of political statements supported the Japanese currency. Donald Trump expressed concern over the yen’s weakness, Prime Minister Takaichi described it as undervalued, and the Minister of Finance stated she expected a correction.

The yen, from the Meiji
era to zero rates

A currency born of a modernisation
The yen was created by the currency act of 27 June 1871, in the middle of the Meiji restoration. Japan was emerging from two and a half centuries of closure and gave itself, in a few years, an administration, an army and a decimal currency modelled on Western examples. The name itself, 円, means “round”: the round coin replaced the oval ingots of the previous era.
The yen held an international rank as early as the interwar years, collapsed in 1945, then reappeared in 1949 pegged to the dollar at 360 to one, a figure chosen by the American occupation administration. It stayed there for twenty-two years.
Thirty years of rates at zero
The bursting of the Japanese property bubble, from 1990 onwards, opened a period without equivalent: the Bank of Japan brought its policy rate to zero in 1999 and held it there, with rare interruptions, for nearly a quarter of a century. It even went into negative territory from 2016 to 2024.
For EUR/JPY, that means the interest rate gap with the euro area was for a long time the only variable that counted. Every time the European Central Bank tightened, the pair rose. Every time Japan hinted that it might leave zero rates, it fell back sharply.
