Swiss franc remains stable against the yen

While the Swiss National Bank held its policy rate at 0%, the franc lost ground against most major currencies on Thursday. The Swiss currency was an exception against the Japanese currency, however. The pair thus remained stable at 0.5235 CHF per 100 JPY.

On Friday, progress in talks between Washington and Tehran, along with a series of warnings regarding the yen, halted the greenback’s upward momentum across foreign exchange markets.

Interest rate differentials drive currency trends

The market focused particularly on the divergence in monetary policy: the SNB remains at zero, while Norges Bank raised its rate to 4.50%, the Federal Reserve recently hiked its own, and the RBA is also preparing to act. In a market environment dominated by yield differentials, Middle East tensions failed to revive the Swiss franc’s traditional safe-haven status.

The two safe havens
of the currency market

The Japanese yen and the foreign exchange market

Two currencies that rise when everything falls

The Swiss franc and the Japanese yen are a rare case: two currencies that appreciate in crises, for reasons that have nothing to do with each other. The franc because Switzerland is a net creditor to the rest of the world and politically stable. The yen because Japan has held the largest stock of foreign assets on the planet for thirty years, and that capital comes home when risk rises.

The consequence is counter-intuitive: CHF/JPY often moves less than either currency does against the euro or the dollar. When a shock hits the markets, both rise together and their ratio barely varies.

Except when interest rates get involved

That symmetry breaks on one point: interest rates. Japan held rates at zero or below for nearly thirty years, far longer than Switzerland. The yen thus became the funding currency of the carry trade: you borrow in yen at almost no cost to invest elsewhere at a higher rate.

As long as the trade works, it weighs on the yen. When it unwinds abruptly, as in August 2024, it makes the yen jump in a few sessions. The franc, whose rates rose earlier, no longer goes through those jolts with the same violence.

Exchanging CHF / JPY with b-sharpe

8 questions
What is the difference between this converter and a real exchange?

The converter displays the global interbank rate without fees. However, to carry out a real exchange of swiss franc to yen, the financial institution you use (bank or platform) will add a margin. At b-sharpe, our applied exchange rate includes very low transaction fees (from 0.12%), which are significantly lower than those of traditional banks.

Why convert swiss franc with b-sharpe rather than my bank?

Banks often apply hidden margins of up to 2% on the exchange rate. With b-sharpe, fees start from 0.12% and are always based on the interbank rate. In addition, you always have visibility on the exact amount you will receive before confirming. This saves you up to 80% on your transaction fees.
