The dirham
and Europe

A currency younger than the federation

The dirham of the United Arab Emirates was born in May 1973, less than two years after the federation itself. It replaced two currencies that coexisted on the territory: the Dubai and Qatar riyal on one side, the Bahraini dinar that circulated in Abu Dhabi on the other. Unifying the currency was one of the first concrete acts of the union of the seven emirates.

Its name comes from the Greek drachma, which passed into Arabic through the dirham of the Umayyad caliphates. More than a thousand years of continuity, for a currency that is fifty years old.

A trade corridor, not a balance of power

The European Union is one of the first trading partners of the Emirates. Dubai serves as a re-export platform towards East Africa and South Asia. AED/EUR is therefore not a speculative pair: it is an invoicing rate, used by importers, exporters and a large diaspora.

Since the dirham is pegged to the dollar, this rate says nothing about the Emirati economy: it mechanically follows EUR/USD. A European exporter to the Emirates is therefore watching, in practice, the dollar.
